Lesson 1: Roles and Responsibilities of Fast Lube Technicians

When you complete Lesson 1, you will be able to:

  • Explain how each technician in a fast lube center contributes to the center’s success.
  • Describe standards of behavior and grooming that lube center technicians are expected to follow.
  • Describe the different roles and responsibilities of each type of technician working in a fast lube center
  • Explain the Call and Response system and how it contributes to lube center safety.


Lesson 2: Safety in the Fast Lube Center

When you complete Lesson 2, you will be able to:

  • List the most common fire hazards in a fast lube center.
  • Explain what to do in the event that a fire breaks out in a fast lube center.
  • Describe common hazards in air quality from external irritants and common hazards to eyes and vision.
  • Describe safe use of compressed air, storage drums, and grease guns.
  • Describe common hazards when working under a vehicle.
  • Explain how to reduce the possibility of serious injuries throughout a fast lube center.
  • Explain what to do when an accident happens.


Lesson 3: Customer Service

When you complete Lesson 3, you will be able to:

  • Explain why good customer service is important to the success of a fast lube center.
  • Explain the role of the lube technician in delivering good customer service.
  • Use polite telephone techniques.
  • Respond properly to Special Service Items.


Lesson 4: Fast Lube Center Products and Services

When you complete Lesson 4, you will be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics and functions of motor oil in an engine.
  • Describe in general terms how crude oil is refined.
  • Explain the significance of API Service Classifications.
  • Describe the significance of SAE Viscosity Grades.
  • Describe the purpose and functions of key motor oil additives.
  • Explain the common causes of motor oil failure.
  • Describe the difference between “Normal Service” and “Severe Service” as commonly defined by vehicle manufacturers.
  • Explain how sludge forms in motor oil.
  • Explain why periodic oil and filter changes are necessary to an engine’s operation.
  • Explain how an oil filter works.
  • Explain the differences in function between an engine air filter and a cabin air filter.
  • Explain how a vehicle’s Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system works.
  • Describe the characteristics and function of gear lubricant.
  • Describe the characteristics and functions of automatic transmission fluid.
  • Describe typical fast lube services such as battery service and cooling system service.


Lesson 5: Courtesy Technician

When you complete Lesson 5, you will be able to:

  • Check the operation of headlights, tail lights, and turn signals.
  • Check wiper blades.
  • Inflate tires to the recommended pressure.
  • Vacuum a vehicle’s interior to your center’s quality standards.
  • Lubricate hinges.
  • Fill out and install reminder stickers.
  • Safely drive a customer’s vehicle into the service bay.


Lesson 6: Hood Technician

When you complete Lesson 6, you will be able to:

  • Safely perform all the duties of the hood technician.
  • Check all fluids accessible in the engine compartment.
  • Check and service a battery.
  • Check cooling system condition, including belts and hoses.
  • Add new oil.
  • Check automatic transmission fluid.


Lesson 7: Lube Technician

When you complete Lesson 7, you will be able to:

  • Safely perform the job of the lube technician.
  • Properly remove and replace the oil drain plug.
  • Properly remove an oil filter.
  • Properly install a new oil filter.
  • Lubricate grease fittings and joints.
  • Check the fluid levels in differentials, manual transmission gearboxes transfer cases, and transaxles.


Lesson 8: Greeter and Service Writer

When you complete Lesson 8, you will be able to:

  • Safely perform the duties of the greeter and service writer.
  • Properly answer the telephone.
  • Correctly handle customer complaint calls.
  • Write up service requests.
  • List and describe (including the prices) the services offered by your center.
  • Safely guide and drive a vehicle into the service bay.
  • Conduct a Service Review with a customer.
  • Fill out and install oil service reminder stickers.
  • Correctly ring out and usher out a customer when service is complete.


The Final Exam

Once you have finished all 8 lessons and all required mini-exams you will be given the option to complete the final portion of the Online Technician Academy. The Final Exam is in multiple-choice format and is 100 questions. 

Please Note: 

The Final Exam must be taken at one time. Once you close down the program, it will assume you have completed the test, and you will get your score based on what you completed.  If the student fails the test, you will have to pay the fee for the student to retake the exam.
